Silverfish

Silverfish

Silverfish get their name from the colour of their scales, which are silver or metallic brown.

Their bodies are long — typically 12–19 millimetres — and fish-like, and they have six legs and two antennae.

Silverfish are also called bristle tails because they have three long bristles on the end of their body.

People most often find them in moist or humid places, such as bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, or attics, but they can be present anywhere in the home. They are nocturnal, which means that they are most active at night.

Silverfish feed on the sugar and starch in a range of household items, such as books, photographs, documents, and wallpaper.

Soap, hair, dandruff, and dust can also be food sources for silverfish, along with glue, clothing, silk, cotton, and linen.

Silverfish are shy insects and will hide from humans. They cannot fly or bite, but they can run very quickly.

They can also breed very rapidly, which means that infestations can quickly escalate.

How to get rid of

Silverfish

It’s best to avoid removing silverfish with pesticides unless chemicals are absolutely necessary, especially if you have children or pets. The fewer dangerous toxins in the home the better. A small to moderate infestation may be solved by eliminating the insect’s food sources, preventing moisture build-up, and reducing humidity. A larger one may require trapping and disposal.

The following house cleaning and maintenance steps will help to solve a silverfish problem and may eliminate the pests completely.

  • Repair any leaky pipes or faucets.
  • Improve ventilation.
  • Use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in the air.
  • Perform regular tidying, cleaning, and vacuuming to remove silverfish eggs and crumbs, scraps of paper, debris, and mould.
  • Remove any uneaten pet food.
  • Clean under sinks.
  • Don’t forget to clean crevices, such as the ones around the base of ovens and refrigerators and along baseboards.
  • Fill any cracks that you notice.
  • Seal any areas where wallpaper has become detached from the wall.
